Stocking up on simple DIY style … again

If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you may recall that I once suggested using a piece of old stocking to make a headscarf. Well, I’ve had a few years to think about what to do with any leftover bits (as if I would have thrown them out in the meantime!) and here is the result.neck warmerIt’s a neckwarmer-y type thing that I made by sewing two pieces of stocking like this…… to form a tube like this… (note that I placed the stocking pieces so that the narrower end of one met up with the wider end of the other so that the resulting shape was a fairly even rectangle).

Turn it inside out so the seams are on the inside and you have a neckwarmer! Or, if you’re wearing a jumper in a similar shade to your ex-stockings, it can act as a faux turtleneck.

The one I made is a bit loose and I possibly should have sewn it so it was a bit more fitted, but that’s easily fixed.
If you have enough pieces of stocking, you could make something much bigger like a scarf or a lightweight wrap or even a baby blanket. Or if you don’t want to cut the stockings up, you could make something for your pet based on this idea. Any leftover bits are good for dusting, cleaning, removing nail polish, etc etc.

Note that the stockings I used were fairly thick, I’m not talking about pantyhose (is that what those sheer stocking things are called these days? Or nylons? What do the youngsters say? I never wear them so I don’t know!). Maybe I’m actually referring to tights. But that would mean coming up with a whole new pun for the title of this post so let’s just leave it as stockings for now. You know what I’m talking about, and that’s the main thing!
