Chain of fools
Like anyone interested in fashion I’m a fan of Garance Dore’s blog and her amazing photography. Recently I saw this post and fell in love with this bracelet … which is not available yet and which will be out of my price range when it is, seeing as the most I usually spend on accessories (or anything) is about $10. So I thought I’d have a go at crocheting one instead. What do you think? And do you like the gratuitous use of Suki as a backdrop? The bracelet was a bit of trial and error so I’m not going to try to give the instructions in detail, but it wasn’t exactly tricky. I used fairly fin
e cotton (from the Salvos of course!) and started off by making a ring that would fit around my middle finger out of chain stitch. I did a few rows of double crochet around that, then made the bit that joins the ring and the bracelet by doing rows and rows of double crochet (about 5 stitches across) before making another ring of chain stitches to fit around my wrist and doing rows of double crochet around that too… and that’s it! It had been ages since I’d crocheted but it’s so light and portable that I’ll be doing it again soon, especially as this black bracelet was really just a practice run and I want to make one out of a metallic thread … if I can find that in an op shop! Meanwhile, I thought I was doing pretty well until I saw this… which I’d love to make, but I think I’d better brush up on my skills a bit. I’ll have to make sure I don’t end up heading in this direction and use the craft for questionable purposes…..

That's so stylish and great that you can make it yourself! I did a crochet workshop a couple of weekends ago (as part of my preparation for old age!) and really enjoyed it. I haven't tried this but it seems quite easy to add beads to the yarn as well, so that could look good incorporated into cuffs or bracelets like this. Gratuitous use of cats as props has been noted and appreciated!
Very inspiring. You've got a talent.
I was going to say what Arushi said!
Oh thank you!! Clare I had thought about adding beads etc… that might come later, but I think I like the quite plain look for now. Love that you're preparing for old age.. I don't have to prepare, I feel like I'm already there!!
If you're "already there"… damn… I'm rooted. [please read that as some sort of grounded for life metaphor and not in the colloquial Australian way]I saw that on Dore's blog, loved it, it's by an Australian designer yes? Think it costs and arm and half a leg. However, Indian shops are treasure troves for such items. And they only cost sense.Plus you can't go past Diva's $5 sales. I'm like a pig in a truffle shop there. This is brilliant. You are brilliant. And if you can make this out of a black shot through with gold lurex yarn and name it 'The Suki', then consider it sold to me.
Yes.. it's by a brand called Mania Mania, and I actually met the designer years ago when we both worked at (different) Vogues! Diva sales are dangerous… I'll have to post on the massive rock of a ring I got there! Lurex is on my shopping list now!
Yes. I like this. I can see I'll have to make one for my daughter after I've finished the black lace fingerless gloves she's requested (Designer Knitting Holiday 2009).As for that Habu stainless steel filament, it would add a certain something to your creation, but you might find the silk wrapped stainless steel fibre (A20/21) easier on the nerves, and it still has a glint of the steel showing through the silk. Metallic embroidery thread would be even easier!
p.s.if you want to email me a postal address for you, i can send you some metallic thread that was given to me that i won't be usingjenhow at tpg dot com dot au
m1k1, I will email, but let me just state here how overwhelmed I am at your kindness!! I'm loving all these crafty bloggers who are so nice!

Oh hello, thanks for visiting my blog! I did enjoy the mystery of the maternity skirt and your crochet bracelet is lovely.
sexy, stylish, and daring. that type of ring is surely different. thanks for sharing!!
we're still a long way off old age, but no harm in preparing for it! Loved the regretsy link btw – must get one for my bike, preferably with a rainproof coating.
*nearly* better than the actual Regretsy item are all the hilarious comments.. you are warned not to read them while at work unless laughing so hard you nearly wet yourself is part of your job description.
wow, you did an amazing job! I absolutely love it! xoxo
Thanks so much for visiting my blog and reminding me about the NGV fshion exhibitions. That bracelet you have made is sensational!
such a great job.I believe Tamila's version is like $320 AUD?Yikes! Some beading would be amazing with it.
great ring!Catitahttp://catindreamland.blogspot.com/
I am in love with the look of crochet at the moment too and your ring looks beautiful. I was only thinking when I was crocheting that it would make a nice cuff bracelet with a button. Thanks for the inspirational links too.:)
very interesting, style refers to the armor, I like most shaped who said that the bracelet can not be on the finger and wrist, very clever.Adam,http://fashionispartofme.blogspot.com
That's way awesome! I need to find more chains to manipulate so I can make this!KeepItFvncy,M.E.
