1930s Commercial Art
For most people, weekends are a chance to relax and get out of office wear. But at a “superheroes and villains” costume party I went to on the weekend, I dressed in an ultra conservative suit to play Lois Lane. I soon deeply regretted my choice of character as I discovered that, for me, anyway, there’s little more dull and depressing than wearing corporate attire. I have new respect for office types who manage to wear this kind of uniform day after day and somehow maintain bright and cheerful personalities! Anyway, in an attempt to cheer myself up, and bring a bit of colour to your working week (especially for those of you who do happen to be in an office!), I present some scans from 1930s Commercial Art – a Pepin Press Design Book. Happy Monday!
These are beautiful! I love them all. I always feel bland when I have to dress conservatively! xx
You went dressed as Lois Lane? Oh what a waste of sassy babedom. And it's not only the suit wearing that makes her so-not-you. For starters Lois is a big loser who waits around for a man to save her but bullies the 'nerd'. And she's a groupie. And she's selfish. She's Lois Lame….and er, okay yeah, i take this wayyy too seriously! I've written articles about this and other ways women are portrayed in comic books/superhero world (I'm a comic book freak, I collect them!).Anyway, perhaps you should have worn this suit… now that's a bit more like you! This artwork is just delightful, so beautiful….and I too cannot wear suits. I have a few in my wardrobe, including beautifully custom made ones, I used to wear them in my corporate days but not all the time, I was 'allowed' to wear my style. That kind of conservative structure is not for me. unless we're talking a vintage YSL smoking suit. And even then… the idea of a jacket is just (shivers).
Oooo I love these! I want some posters along these lines. I have walls to fill! And isn't it interesting how wearing something not "you" can make you feel? Party + suit must've been quite odd!
Those illustrations are just gorgeous. I want them all on my walls.
