If you want to destroy my sweater….
Not that I enjoy destroying things that have obviously been made with so much dedication to detail, but sometimes a little reworking is necessary in order for them to be wearable. I bought this rather unique piece at a clothes swap fundraiser a few weeks ago – I couldn’t go past the seascape design and the handmade label. Meryl Lloyd was a funky lady!
It’s not a handknit, and I’m wondering whether knitting machines would have been cheap enough for the average person to have their own?
Unfortunately, there are a few holes in it and it’s not a particularly flattering shape worn as it is – well, it was made in the late 80s, after all, possibly as part of a knitwear design course?

Anyway, regardless of its provenance, I’m going to have to rework it somehow to get any wear out of it. I’m thinking of a mini sweater-dress or something like that, but I’m not sure I’ll get to it in time to wear it this winter. How about you, what projects have you got waiting around?
I have loads! Felted more than a couple of old jumpers a few weeks ago thinking I would make hot water bottle covers, etc. and only one so far! Also have a few more jumpers I would like to restyle but busy making bags and more bags at the moment.
I'm really interested to see what you do with this. I have a bunch of dresses that need zips replacing. My least favourite job.
Replacing zips is right up there with making the bed as one of my least favourite things to do, but at least it's something you can (partially) do while in front of a good DVD… why not get a whole pile of those dresses and do the ripping out and pinning of new zips all at once, it's a great excuse to watch a movie! Tiziana, I am going to check out your blog now if you have one…
Does any have any information about Meryl Lloyd ??Just picked up an amazing long gown – machine knit and hand embroided.Looks very 40s but must be early 80s I guess. If you have any info, please reply
Hi, so did your gown have the same label in it? How interesting! I don't have any info about her at all unfortunately but let me know more about your gown… any pics?
Same label. I am 5'7" and it is probable for a woman slightly taller. Not sure how to get photos up for you to see though.Someone must know something about her. Not embroided, beaded sorry.
Interesting… can't find anything on the internet but someone must know… do you have a blog? A bit hard to communicate with an 'anonymous'!
Just quickly popped this up so you can see images .. http://wannanobout.blogspot.com.au/
How funny, I was just going through some old cards and googled my old boss Meryl to see if she was still around. I worked for Meryl in the mid to late 80’s working her knitting machines. She designed these exclusive machine knitted garments from her little home in Essendon. People would employ her talents to make them amazing knits as well as she would do fashion shows for fundraisers at people homes. Thanks for the memories
That’s amazing! I’m so glad I finally found out who Meryl was. Do you still have any of her garments?
