Stay a while in Daylesford

Hello! I’m glad you’re still with me. I thought I might have lost a few of you to envy after my last post, tee hee!! Well if I didn’t then, I might now, because after the pampering at High Tea Under the Arches, we were met with the luxury of Holly Lodge. Four expansive double bedrooms, each with an ensuite and private courtyard spaces. I’m sure you can guess which one I chose to stay in…

It’s as if they knew I was coming!
Check out the David Bromley work on the wall – it was just one of several throughout the house. None of your generic hotel art here!

Part of the fun of exploring this generously proportioned place was stumbling on all the knick knacks…

I could happily have spent many hours in the well-stocked library …

… but there was a garden to explore…

… with rhododendrons in full bloom…
… and a little orchard, although there was no fruit yet.

We were a little late to enjoy them, but the camellias must look stunning on these huge trees…

A little copse of birches leads to a Tuscan-inspired courtyard…

… where Sarah W, Sarah K, Marianne and myself gathered for Iolanthe to grab a group shot.

I relaxed with a book for a while in my own little courtyard, but I have to admit that walnuts kept falling on me – yes, there is a huge walnut tree or two at Holly Lodge: imagine the harvest in autumn! – so I went back in to dress for dinner (ie, put on jeans and a jumper. Hey, I can’t dress up all the time!).

Iolanthe cooked a delicious dinner for us and we stayed up nibbling and laughing and talking about the great Australian novel, childhood dental trucks, our future self-styled personas for when we are rich and famous, and of course, BOYS. Haha… if you’re looking for a great girly getaway (hen’s night? special birthday?) or somewhere to hang out with other couples, we all highly recommend this place!

There is of course a lot more to tell you about what Daylesford has to offer in terms of activities, but in this post I wanted to show you the different kinds of accommodation in the area. The two Sarahs and Marianne went home on Sunday night, but Iolanthe and I stayed on and got to check out Bunker, another property available through Dayget

Surrounded by bush, if Bunker had a soundtrack, it would be the sound of kookaburras whooping it up as they fly from treetop to treetop. It’s all about enjoying the natural surrounds at this place, which has two double rooms and would be nice and cosy for a small group of friends, a family, or two couples.

Is there anything more comforting in winter than gathering around a wood fire? It was too warm when we visited to use it, but it would be lovely in the cooler months.

With a record playing in the background and a meal sizzling on the stove, it’s easy to enjoy life’s simple pleasures!

Of course a cup of tea, comfy cushions and fresh air help too…

A few little treats from local producers don’t go astray either. This box of goodies is standard issue at quite a few of the Dayget properties. We got one at Holly Lodge too, but the contents mysteriously disappeared before I could get any shots of it!

I’ll leave you with some more shots of the property – it’s got huge glass doors at the back to let all the scenery and light in so you can enjoy the view even from the sofa indoors. But here you can just see Iolanthe sneaking out to enjoy a few minutes’ more reading time on the sofa outside before dusk fell.

I really didn’t plan to wear African-inspired outfits the entire weekend, but somehow it turned out that way. At least I kind of look like I dressed for the location?? I’m in a top that I made from a dress I found in an op shop in Japan, $1 pants from the Brotherhood of St Laurence (had to take them in to make them capri-style as they were too short to wear as-is), jewellery from flea markets and Beads for Wildlife, and shoes (new!!) from Zomp.

Thanks again to Iolanthe for 1. cooking dinner and 2. providing me with much better photos than my camera – and my photography skills – are capable of! Oh, and for the company too, of course!
