Spring is coming: DIY Game of Thrones-style

If I were to say Game of Thrones is influencing my DIY ideas lately, I’m sure visions of dragon-skin corsets and wolf-fur jerkins start dancing through your head. But it’s more difficult than you’d think to source dragon skin in Melbourne, so my inspiration has come from reading about the show’s costume department and how they create “authentic” outfits (well, as authentic as a fantasy history drama can be!). Apparently, “all clothing… is aged for two weeks to improve realism on high-definition television”. My clothing is unlikely to be on TV (high-definition or otherwise) any time soon, but it doesn’t hurt to take some DIY tips from the professionals. Plus, I happen to have the perfect piece of clothing with which I can experiment… 

I bought this denim jacket for $6 from an op shop in a vain attempt to replace the Lee one that I stupidly, STUPIDLY, swapped a few years ago (this is why I so rarely get rid of clothes – I end up missing them!). It was the perfect shape, was faded to just the right soft, flattering blue and looked properly lived in. This one by Bettina Liano is OK when it comes to fit, but it’s still too dark. (Just because it’s “designer” doesn’t make it perfect!)   

I know, I could soak it in bleach or some kind of dye, but that is 1. risky and 2. not exactly eco-friendly. More to the point, I’m dying (haha, no pun intended) to find out whether the Game of Thrones treatment works. So I’m going to hang this jacket in the garden for two weeks, in all weathers (although Melbourne’s late winter is not usually quite as bad as what the men of the Night’s Watch endure), and see what happens! Yes, this is the laziest DIY ever, but if it doesn’t work, I’ll have to start looking for that dragon skin again…

日本でもGame of Thronesって流行っていますか？ここオーストラリアではみ〜んなが見ているような気がしたから私も最近見始めてやっぱりはまってしまいました！ストーリーもすごいけれど、衣装にもインスパイアされました。それはどういうことかというと、中世期のドレスとかオオカミの毛でできたケープが着たいという意味じゃなくて、衣装の作り方に興味を持っていることです。より古くてリアルに見えるため、ドラマに出る衣装は全て2週間ぐらい外に置きっぱなしされているようです。それを読んで自分で同じような実験をしたくなりました！実験台となるのは最近チャリティショップで買ったジージャンです。フィットはOKだけど色が濃すぎてもっとヴィンテージっぽくしたい。Game of Thronesの衣装のように、庭で太陽や風の強い場所にかけてみました。かなり簡単なDIYでしょ？まだ効果待ちだけど、楽しみです！
